Triple-Pane vs. Double-Pane Windows in Colorado
For most Colorado homes, triple-pane windows are the stronger choice. Denver and most of the state sit in ENERGY STAR’s Northern climate zone, the coldest of its four zones. Since October 23, 2023, ENERGY STAR windows sold for that zone must have a U-factor of 0.22 or lower. Triple-pane glass is the simplest way to meet that standard.
What the third pane does
A double-pane window has two layers of glass with one sealed space between them. A triple-pane window adds a third layer and a second sealed space. Each space slows heat on its way out of your house. You feel the difference near the glass on a cold night. The extra layer also blocks more street noise.
Two numbers to check on any window
Every rated window carries an NFRC label. Two numbers on it matter most in Colorado.
U-factor: how fast heat escapes. Lower is better. ENERGY STAR’s Northern zone calls for 0.22 or lower. Its Most Efficient label calls for 0.20 or lower.
SHGC (solar heat gain): how much of the sun’s heat passes through. In the Northern zone, ENERGY STAR now requires at least 0.17, so winter sun can still help warm your rooms.
Ask any company you talk to for these two numbers on the exact windows they quote.
When double-pane still makes sense
Double-pane can be a fair choice for a home you plan to sell soon, a rental, or a tight budget. Some double-pane windows with specialty glass meet the Northern zone standard too. Check the label before you decide.
